Seneca Weintraut • D_NNER PARTY

Over the past several years, thought leaders across many industries have begun to engage in conversations on how the nature of truth and authenticity in American society is subtly shifting. In D_NNER PARTY, Seneca Weintraut’s current solo exhibition at Commonweal, he engages with American myth and technological development to explore our commitment to building a shared vocabulary for this new reality. More closely aligned than we might like to admit are how we intuitively understand the world to work and the underlying mechanics which we can empirically prove. Weintraut’s paintings and sculptures act as a workshop in which to test out and refine why and how we may authentically experience a world where truth is neither fact nor fiction but a product of cooperative understanding.

Born in 1988, Weintraut is a Hoosier living and working in Philadelphia. He attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the summer of 2013, and received his MFA in painting from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2015. His work has been exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago and was featured in New American Paintings #113. In years past, Weintraut counted money on a riverboat casino, cut grass in an oil refinery and built mausoleums in several prominent cemeteries. Currently, he maintains a studio at The Loom in Philadelphia where he uses his singular vision to develop paintings and sculptures. Commonweal is proud to have the opportunity to exhibit one of Philadelphia's most innovative and provocative voices exploring the landscape of the contemporary American psyche.
