G. Farrel Kellum - Dark Energy

ded

Dark Energy is G. Farrel Kellum’s second solo exhibition with COMMONWEAL. Inspired by both his childhood participation in the March on Washington in 1963 and his discovery of Mahayana Buddhism after returning from military service in the 1970s, Dark Energy features all new sculptures and paintings, alongside elements of installation.

These works explore Kellum’s understanding of the transformative energy that carried the people of the Central and West African diaspora through the trauma of slavery and Jim Crow, as well as continues to support them when faced with the multitude of challenges that arise from being Black in America today. Kellum believes that the residue of dark energy throughout world culture can be glimpsed in the visual arts, music, dance, literature, and sciences produced by Black visionaries.
