Investigation: Where do you place yourself when you’ve been displaced? Being surrounded by Byzantine iconography all my life - I found that symbolism, flatness, color, and abstraction were intimated to create that “other” space. In Greco-Roman Antiquity, abstraction manifested in order to represent this otherworldliness - that elevated otherness. I found myself in it. Antiquity is a part of my queer history and queer representation. I saw the body in the vessel. I saw flora and fauna as liberation. I saw sexuality as divine playfulness. I’ve placed myself in this flat and unknown space to figure out what is there, under the surface.
